Today – September 1st, 2021 – marks the 10 year anniversary of Yoink being on the Mac App Store.

A Blast from the Past

Check out Federico Viticci‘s review of Yoink 1.0 over on MacStories.

Look at that UI… šŸ˜³

Yoink’s very first review on the Mac App Store

Let the celebration commence

To mark the occasion, Yoink is ~37% off on the Mac App Store for a limited time.
I’m also giving away a couple of promo codes on Twitter and Facebook – with a little luck, you might get Yoink for free there!

Thank you all for your support over the years, I appreciate it tons.

ScreenFloat's Mac App Icon

Since Iā€™m having trouble with the macOS Catalina-compatible ScreenFloat v1.5.17 update getting through review, I thought itā€™d be best to publish a quick note about how to make sure ScreenFloat works for you on macOS Catalina. Otherwise, youā€™ll probably end up with screenshots of your Desktop, instead of the actual windows youā€™re trying to take a screenshot of.

  1. Quit ScreenFloat if itā€™s running
  2. In Terminal.app (in /Applications/Utilities/), type the following, followed by enter/return:
    tccutil reset All at.EternalStorms.ScreenFloat-appstore

This resets all of ScreenFloatā€™s permissions on your Mac (the only one it uses is the Screen Recording one). If youā€™re using the demo, replace ā€˜-appstore’ with ā€˜-demoā€™.
At this point, a restart of your Mac might be necessary.

  3. Launch ScreenFloat and take a screenshot.
  4. If a dialog appears asking for screen recording permissions, click on Open System Preferences and select ScreenFloat in the list that appears
If the dialog doesnā€™t appear, launch System Preferences, select Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> Screen Recording and select ScreenFloat there.
  5. Restart ScreenFloat

Now ScreenFloat will be able to create screenshots again.

My apologies for the inconvenience. Iā€™m hoping to have the update for it out soon, but currently, Iā€™m at the App Store App Reviewā€™s mercy.

Whatā€™s new in Yoink v3.5.3?

  • Continuity Camera is now supported by Yoink and lets you save photos or documents from your iPhone or iPad right to Yoink (requires macOS Mojave 10.14 and iOS 12)
  • Keep the FN key on your keyboard pressed to temporarily toggle the ā€œfile lockā€, or temporarily disable Yoink altogether during drags
  • The keyboard shortcut (by default, F5) now has three functions: Press once to toggle Yoink, press-and-hold to recall previously removed files, double-press to add your clipboardā€™s contents
  • Yoinkā€™s position on your screen can now be more easily and natively changed, by dragging the window itself

Aside from these new features, version 3.5.3 also makes a couple of performance and stability improvements:

  • Reduces CPU (and power) usage when checking for drags
  • No longer checks for drags in most games
  • Improved compatibility with Panic, Inc.ā€™s Transmit, Apple, Inc.ā€™s Remote Desktop and DevonThink

Yoink Overview

What is Yoink?

Yoink offers a temporary place for file- and app-content drags to free your mouse so you can more easily and quickly navigate to the actual destination of your drag.
This is especially helpful when it comes to moving and copying files between different windows, spaces or (fullscreen-) apps.

How does Yoink fit into my workflow?

Yoink stays in the background most of the time, waiting for you to drag something. The app fades in at the edge of your screen when you start a drag, like a file in Finder, or app-content like an image from a website, or text from a document.
Drag your files to Yoink, and your mouse is free for you to navigate more easily and comfortably. Yoink will hold on to the files you drag to it until you drag them out again.

The app can be customized in a number of ways.
You can set up where it should appear (at either side of your screen, top, center or bottom; or at the mouse cursor), when it should appear (when a drag starts, or when a drag reaches the edge of your screen) and what apps it should (or should not) appear in.
If a file drag contains multiple files, a Stack is created so you can drag them out together again easily. Stacks can also be split up if you’d like to drag out one specific file in that drag.
Quick Look is available for all files you add to Yoink, as icon previews for quick identification and as full previews for a detailed look.
A keyboard shortcut lets you hide Yoink if you currently don’t need it, and show it again when you do.
